Philosophy & company history

The watch factory Junghans GmbH & Co. KG was founded in 1861 by Erhard Junghans and Jakob Zeller-Tobler in Schramberg in the Black Forest. By 1903, Junghans was already the world's largest watch factory with over 3,000 employees and more than three million timepieces produced annually.

In the 1960s, the designer Max Bill shaped the legendary Junghans watches with Bauhaus minimalism. His max bill models remain iconic Bauhaus-style classics to this day.

Junghans has been a pioneer in the field of time technology on several occasions: in 1971, the brand presented the first German quartz watch, and in 1972 Junghans was the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games in Munich. From the 1990s, the world's first radio and solar-powered wristwatches followed, such as the Mega 1 from 1990 and the analog MEGA from 1991.

After economic turbulence and insolvency in 2008, the company was taken over by local entrepreneurs in 2009. Junghans continues to exist at the Schramberg site and celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2011 with anniversary models.

Production technology & quality - tradition meets innovationProduction technology & quality - tradition meets innovation

Production technology & quality - tradition meets innovation

The headquarters and production facilities are still located in Schramberg, where the brand remains firmly linked to the Black Forest watch region.  Junghans is now privately owned and employs just over 100 people in the watch sector.

The spectrum ranges from typical quartz movements and solar quartz movements to radio-controlled and multifunctional watches. Particularly well-known are radio-controlled quartz models such as the MEGA series, in which the time is automatically synchronized daily via DCF-77 radio link - with an accuracy of around one second in a million years.

Production combines craftsmanship with modern technologies. Junghans relies on industrial automation, robotics and modern series production at its Hirschhagen plant (subsidiary). Junghans Microtec, a subsidiary, also demonstrates its technical expertise in the field of precision parts - based in Dunningen near Schramberg.

Collections & added value for technology enthusiasts

The brand offers various collections:

  • - max bill: purist Bauhaus aesthetics, often with caliber J101 radio-controlled solar technology.
  • - 1972: sporty chronographs with retro design and motorsport references, alluding to the 1972 Olympic Championships.
  • - Meister, Form and Meister Pilot: classic and sporty lines with automatic movement, data functions, GMT, moon phase, etc.

Models with solar technology (e.g. Force Mega Solar), radio reception via DCF77, JJY and WWVB as well as connected radio-controlled solar movements such as J101.85 also stand for technical diversity and modern watchmaking.

Junghans offers serious added value for tech-savvy buyers: precise radio technology, reliable solar energy and water-protected cases with sapphire or mineral glass - up to 100 m, depending on the model.
